I don't think I'm that great but I was addicted enough to commit getting every single gold medal for every single campaign and bonus/dlc/community maps. I've never used a guide (except for some achievements) and broke into the top 100 on a few occasions. After some time (for me at least), you'll realize there's some things you can exploit depending on the map, and some things you absolutely most employ as much as possible (like making use of the command tower as early as possible to maximize money). For example, it is extremely important to know when to push down certain lanes in small groups to eliminate strategic targets, such as a farm to decrease your opponent's aeon mob spawning or a tower that is hamstringing your efforts.
